Quick HIIT Before a Morning on the Slopes

Good Morning!  Quick post before I head out to ski…

This morning I woke up early and busted out a Janetha-inspired HIIT.  It has been so convenient having a treadmill here at the hotel.  Access to a treadmill is the one thing I really miss about having a gym membership.  However, I am also missing Pure Barre.  Today, at the end of my workout I did a few planks, just to feel my abs again!  Below is my workout:

Minutes/Incline/Speed

1-10/0.0/4.0

10-13/0.0/6.0

13/0.5/6.5

14/0.5/7.0

15/0.5/7.5

16/0.5/4.0

17/1.0/6.5

18/1.0/7.0

19/1.0/7.5

20/1.0/4.0

21/1.5/6.5

22/1.5/7.0

23/1.5/7.5

24/1.5/4.0

25/2.0/6.5

26/2.0/7.0

27/2.0/7.5

28/2.0/4.0

29/0.0/8.0

30-35/0.0/4.0

35-40/0.0/4.1

I always mix it up when I am on the treadmill, but this workout was great because of the focus on the HIGH INTENSITY part of HIIT.  I felt sweaty and awesome after my treadmill session- and now I’m ready for the day!

Home for the Holidays 10K

Today I did my Home for the Holidays 10K, even though I am not exactly home for the holidays.  I am in Lake Tahoe, CA at Squaw Valley on a ski trip with  the family I travel nanny for.  Right after graduating from college I worked as a nanny in Washington, DC while I had my first teaching job.  Many years later, I no longer live in DC, or nanny on a regular basis, but I do still travel with this family.

We have been coming to ski in Tahoe for 6 years!  It is so fun to see the kids every year, and really awesome to see how much they have progressed in their skiing!  Mornings start early as I rush around to get the kids dressed, fed and ready for ski school, so to work out, I wake up extra early and hit up the gym at the resort.  It is way to cold and dark to run outside, so the treadmill becomes my friend during this week every year.

I took this picture before I got on the treadmill. I don’t run a lot on the treadmill, and actually I haven’t run this much since my half marathon on December 11, so this was a big deal.  I look a little cold in the pictures because to get to the gym you have to walk outside, down two flights of stairs and across the ice skating area!  Brrr!

I jumped on the treadmill and started the speed at 5.0 mph to warm up.  I gradually sped up, and then through a series of sprints as fast as 7.2 mph, but mostly hovering around 6.2 mph.  Two episodes of “A Baby Story” on TLC later and I was a sweaty but happy mess.

I am glad that I participated in the Home for the Holidays 10K.  I definitely would not have run 6.1 miles otherwise, and it was a nice kick in the butt to really work myself.  I am pretty committed to working about, and would have worked out anyway, but on ski trips I tend to really take it easy when I am not skiing, so it was good to throw a harder day in the mix.  I’m also glad I did it this morning (Friday) and got it out of the way…now it is time to ski, sip hot cocoa by the fire, and relax!

Patagucci anyone?

One of my favorite blogs to read is J’s Everyday Fashion.  I am by no means a fashionista, but I love the idea of thinking about what you wear, and combining unique, but normal clothes into great outfits.  I say I love the idea of it, because in truth, I am not very fashionable at all. I try to be well put together for work, but at home, during the summer, and on weekends it’s mostly work out clothes!  For instance- today she posted a lot of cute, affordable dresses and other outfits for New Years Eve.  I, on the other hand went on a shopping spree at the Patagonia Outlet in Reno, and in addition to some outdoor wear, I think I also picked up my New Years Eve top:

Not quite J worthy, but cute, right?  I also picked up a new fleece, a fun jacket for around town, two pairs of pants for trekking in Bolivia/xc skiing, and a black dress that I am feeling kind of ehh about…

For Derek, I got an R1 Hoodie, some Capilene, boxers, and a new polo shirt.

So while I admire the fashionable J, at heart I am more of a yoga pants, fleece pullover kind of girl!

And the trip rolls on!

Yesterday I left sunny, beautiful Florida….

….and landed in freezing cold Tahoe!

This is my 6th year coming with the kids to lake Tahoe for winter break.  It started with an innocent enough question- their dad knew that he would be spending time with them over break, and asked if I had any vacation ideas.  I quickly chose skiing!  Since I did not learn to ski until I was an adult, I had always wished to “grow up skiing” and go on ski trips.  All of my skiing experience had consisted of driving from Poultney to Killington and skiing long days before driving home to a dorm.  The dream of a ski vacation, and family centered traditions around skiing sounded like so much fun- hence our yearly trips to Squaw Valley began.  (Of course, at this point in my life, Derek and I have gone on a lot of ski trips- but they are mostly quick overnights in budget hotels.  Totally awesome, but not Squaw Creek!)

We stay at Squaw Creek, and by now that kids have favorites- like the favorite breakfast, their favorite ski trail, their favorite thing to do after skiing.  It’s nice to come back to the same place- we know where ski school and rentals are, we know what the shuttle ride will be like, we know where to get the best hot chocolate for after skiing!  I feel so happy to be here again- Squaw Creek is like a home away from home.

This morning I woke up early and headed to the gym to get a quick workout in before a morning on the slopes.  I do exercise before I ski when I am here, mostly because I don’t ski very hard. I am skiing by myself, and just don’t push myself too much.  Plus, this year there is not a lot of snow, and not a lot of terrain open, so I am not sure how much skiing I will get in.  An hour on the treadmill, followed by some Pure Barre-esque abs did it for me.  Now I’m off to get the kids ready, hit up breakfast, and then the slopes!

A Sunny Florida Morning

I thought I would have a ton of time to catch up on the blog during my little Florida escape.  Of course, we have been so busy since I got here, I have barely been able to sit down at the computer, much less blog.  I am sensing a theme here- every time I go away, I think that I will get a lot of work on the blog done, and every time, it doesn’t happen!  Anyway, I arrived late on Saturday night, and we kicked the day off yesterday at 6:30am!

I woke up and went on a quick run- then my grandfather and I went to Green Kay Nature Preserve for his morning walk.  Every morning he walks about 1.5 miles.  Yesterday I was able to convince him to go for about 2 miles.  Green Kay is an awesome board walk through a wetlands preserve.  There are a ton of birds and turtles to see along the way, and a steady stream of retired people walking the trails.  It is a nice way to start the morning, and I am glad I was able to walk with my grandpa.

Yesterday morning we also ate bialys and lox, stopped by the cemetery to see my Grandma, swam in the pool and then my aunt and my cousin for lunch at the Dune Deck.  This is one of my favorite places to eat lunch when I am visiting.  It is located by Lantana Beach, and it is just beautiful.

One huge greek salad and a lot of laughs later, we headed off to Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach.  I love walking around Delray with my Aunt because she is willing to go into every store and look around.  That’s my kind of shopper!  I am definitely more of a browser than a buyer, but I do enjoy shopping around.  This is something that Derek and most of my friends in Colorado hate to do, so it is a treat to hang in Florida and window shop!  Below are some pictures of some crazy find at the antique shop- I couldn’t beleive all the wack stuff there- or the prices!

oh, you’re not i nthe market for an $11,000 25 foot tall statue?

We finished the night at the Bonefish Grill, which was awesome.  I had the Ahi Tuna, but everyone’s meal looked great!

This morning started early again with a 5 mile walk.  Then I met up with Grandpa and we headed back to Green Kay and the boardwalk.  We went for a nice 1.5 mile stroll and then headed back for bialys and lox.  Do you sense a pattern here?  A dip in the pool later, we are now relaxing until we meet some of the ladies from the community for lunch.  The plan for after lunch includes walking around Misner Park, and then heading to Coral Springs to see my Aunt, Uncle, and Ali for dinner.  Just another day in paradise….

Yesterday was insane!

I woke up at 3:40am yesterday to “Finish it up Friday” and get those placemats finished. Thank goodness they are D-O-N-E, D-O-N-E, DONE, DONE, DONE! Place mats are a pain in the neck because of all of those corners- plus, since they are so small, every little part needs to be perfect. I am still working to get my shoulders to relax and come down from my ears after that marathon sewing experience!

Yesterday was also the last day of school before vacation- so it was a mad rush to get everything wrapped up on that front and close of shop for winter break! After school I rushed hom, met Liz for a walk with the dogs, and then hopped in the car to Fort Collins for a little family visit. Derek’s aunt, uncle, and cousin Steph live in Fort Collins, and his cousin Greg was in town visiting from Chicago. Last night was the only night that my sister and brother in law, Derek , and I could drive up to FoCo and see Greg- so even though it was a crazy day, and I am leaving today for 10 days, we went up to catchup with the family. It was great to see everyone- and we had a pretty intense Yankee Swap, lots of laughter and a great meal. We also played “Just Dance” for wii- so fun!  I have got to figure out how to get a wii, hook it up to the imac, and play all day!  Of course, this meant that we left late to head home, and arrived home exhausted!

(Just a few pics of Pico, before I drag her out for a walk!)

I’m pumping out this post early this morning before a dog walk and Pure Barre- then it will be packing time, before I head to the airport for Florida….expect another update later today or tomorrow!

Work in Progress Wednesday

I can’t beleive it is already Wednesday!  I have 1.5 days until all of my projects need to be complete- some for work gifts (last day of school before break is Friday) and some to get in the mail before i leave town Saturday morning.  Last night I was totally exhausted, and after buying the thread I needed for the quilting and winding up some bobbins, I crashed on the couch in front of some Netflix “How I Met Your Mother” episodes.

In order to make some more progress I woke up early this morning and got cranking on the sewing machine at around 4:45am.  Thankfully Derek is a sound sleeper, and Pico scurried into the bedroom to get away from the sewing machine noise too.  I was able to quilt two complete sets, with two more sets left to be quilted.  I also, obviously need to bind them up too, before Friday morning!  Below are some pics of my progress.

Tonight I am planning to do all of the quilting and binding I can, and maybe hit up the fabric store for anything else I need to finish these projects!  Tomorrow morning will not be a great time for sewing, since I am definitely going to hit up Pure Barre.  I’m feeling bummed that I can’
t make it today, but a walk with the dog will have to do. Ahhhh- holidays!

How are your works in progress coming?  Any last minute holiday sewing?

Our Delicious Trip to Tucson

I thought it would be easy to blog from Tucson- that in fact I would have a lot of time to chill out and work on fixing up the blog total- not the case!  One thing that drives me crazy is when hotels charge you for internet.  I mean come on, really?!?  Internet is so prevalent that you can find it in every coffee shop, library, airport, laundromat, etc.  Needless to say, I did not get any work done on the blog, or really any blogging in- we did however, have a great time!

We left Boulder on Saturday afternoon, after a pretty relaxing morning walking the dog, Pure Barre-ing, cleaning, and packing.  I knew that since we had a late flight and the race expo closed at 5pm, we would really have to hustle once we got off the plane.  Well, hustle was an understatement.  We ran to the shuttle for the rental car, picked up the car, and put the pedal to the metal to get to the expo on time.  We just barely made it, with me running down the corridor of the hotel and into the ballroom that was hosting the expo.  I was psyched to make it in time and I was able to change form the marathon to the half- thank goodness!

We headed straight for some hot tub soaking before hitting up Café Poca Cosa for dinner.  I had read about Poca Cosa on the Fitnessista blog (which, by the way, her Tucson Faves page, really made our vacation awesome!) and knew we would love it.  Since it was Saturday night, there were no reservations available, but we decided to chance it, and go hang at the bar.  We lucked out and only had to wait about 20 minutes- we enjoyed great drinks, and then made or way to the table.  At Poca Cosa the menu changes daily, with about 7-8 choices available.  I ordered the fish- amazing!, and Derek had the Plato Poca Cosa- a little of everything- he at e it all, so it must have been good!

The next morning started early- with a 5:15am bus ride to the start.  I’ll do a full race review later this week- but let me just say, Tucson Marathon/Half Marathon was awesome!  Well organized, beautiful, and fun!  Anyway, I was not sure at this point if I would walk or run, or both.  Well- I started the race running, and just kept telling myself that I could walk when I needed too.  SPOILER ALERT: I rant the whole race and had a great time!

After the race, we scooted out of the finish area and headed straight to brunch at Blue Willow- another Fitnessista recommendation.  Again, so good!  (the theme here is that food in Tucson is amazing!) The morning continued with a trip to Eegeees, and then some soaking in the hot tub and hanging by the pool.  The perfect way to recover from a half marathon!

Last night we met our friend Josh and his friend Kathy for happy hour at Guadalajara Grill.  Josh ran the full marathon, and t was fun to debrief the race and hear the war stories.  Kathy lives in Tucson and is an endurance athlete.  She’s training for a 50k- pretty inspiring!  After leaving them, we headed out to El Guero Canelo (yes, Fitnessista) where Derek had a Tucson fave- the Sonoran Hot Dog (ewww) and I just sipped some horchata.   At this point I was pretty tired, and definitely ready for more hot tubbing and bed!

This morning we ran met up with Josh again at Frank’s Restaurant- recommended to us by Kathy, and had an awesome, and cheap breakfast- $1.75 for eggs, hash browns, and a homemade tortilla.  It was gray, and starting to look it might rain, so we rushed out to try and make it to hike in Sabino Canyon before it really poured.

Sabino Canyon was awesome, but I was so bummed that it was rainy and grey !  We did stick it out for about an hour of hiking, but I could have easily hiked around for 3 or 4 hours!  Now, my legs, were probably happy that we were forced back to the hotel, but I was bummed to not spend (what felt like) enough time in the desert!  At the hotel we went in the hot tub (again!), showered up, and packed our bags.  We also caught up on a little HGTV, which I need to watch whenever we are at a hotel…one bad thing about not having a TV at our house!

Finally, we ended our trip with lunch at Little Poca Cosa- which is associated with Cafe Poca Cosa, but is only open for breakfast and lunch.  All the reviews are true- they do serve delicious food, the music is loud, and they do hug and kiss you when you leave.  Definitely my favorite place we went to in Tucson!

On our way out of town we stopped at the Tucson Tamale Company and picked up a dozen tamales to take home- all different flavors, so I am anticipating some reviews in the future!  Derek and I were talking about roses and thorns (our way of high points and low points) during lunch and we both identified the food in Tucson as amazing and definitely a rose from the trip!  Thorns include the traffic, the lack of internet, and the rain today…but they are thorns, only little annoyances, compared to the roses- the food, the race, the desert, and hanging together!

Tucson in Pictures…

Well, the only downside to staying at a fancy hotel is the lack of internet.  Seriously?  $12 per day for internet???  Anyway, I am writing up an epic race and trip recap, and will post when we get to the Tucson airport this afternoon, or when we get home tonight…for now, enjoy a few pics from the weekend!

Finish(ing) it up Friday…or really early on Saturday!

It’s pretty early in the morning but I have been cranking away, ironing, cutting, pinning, and preparing binding strips this morning!  We are headed out to Tucson this afternoon, and of course I am trying to cram a million things in this morning.  Below are two pictures of what I have done so far- and my goal is to get one more set of place mats prepped before I walk the dog, and head out to Pure Barre!

Last night I was at school late, and then stopped by the Pure Barre holiday party for a bit.  I am glad that I went, because I do think it is important to reach out and make friends- especially since I am spending so much time there.  It’s good to spend time with people you have stuff in common with, and even though I am usually drawn to just hang low- especially on a friday night, I know I need to reach out more.  I am going to go to the 8:30am class this morning, stop by Jo-Ann’s to pick up thread and then hopefully get some quilting in before we leave town.  Of course I have not yet packed, and I was just googling around to check what time out flight is!  We’ll be cutting it close arriving in Tucson at 4…and needing to get to the race expo by 5…..

My plan is to post again tonight, when we are relaxing at the hotel- maybe even by the pool?!?  Can’t wait to not be freezing!
